This book is a crystal ball. A tribute to literature. It's that book that tells you books.
A dystopia that shows us what a future would be like where books are banned and possessing them is a crime. In addition to all this, we still have a form of crime control, based on the C gene, and whoever commits a criminal act is meticulously examined, leading to two possible outcomes, positive and negative, in the case of the second, the criminal is sentenced to death penalty. As if this crime control wasn't enough, we still see birth control here, but not related to numbers, but parents having the power to choose how they want their child to come (the perfect child).
Right in the preface I fell in love with everything that was to come and with each page I was more and more surprised by the story developed by the author. His poetic writing brings a very strong feeling to the book, making the reader feel despair, sadness and hope for a future where books, one day, can return to circulation. This future is presented to us through the point of view of two characters: Alice and Santiago Pena.
Alice is a curious child, very attached to stories and ignored by her family, who just call her "girl". Her older sister pays no more attention to her than to her parents, and so, with each one in their corner, they try to live as a family. Santiago, on the other hand, spent more than 20 years of his life in jail for a crime he claimed he did not commit. Remember the C gene? Through exams carried out every 5 years, the answers were always the same. Negative. But for safety, they kept him locked up. Santiago was arrested before the ban on books, I have the opportunity to see many works in the prison library.
From the moment that Alice and Santiago's paths cross, the reader follows the innocence of a child in the face of the mysterious foreigner and the construction of a network of lies that lead to a surprising ending that left me thinking “How many pages did I skip? ”.
A book to move and make you reflect. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
