This book was a surprise as it is an amazing read in every way. With an ending I wasn't expecting.
HAVING BOOKS IS A CRIME. REPORT IT.
In three parts, the book will tell the story of Hilário and his love for books and the girl Alice who loves to hear stories in a time when books no longer exist.
Hilário is accused of a crime that he says he did not commit and, because he is not a carrier of the C-gene, he is sentenced to stay in prison. After some time in prison, he will meet António, a Portuguese man who will share prison with him. And a beautiful friendship is born where they start to take care of the jail's library and that's where Hilário's love for books is born. And it is through books that he can get out of that lonely saddle in which he lives.
In the other part of the book we have the girl Alice, a sweet, cute child with a family that shamelessly despises her. She becomes attached to her new neighbor, the mysterious Santiago Pena who has just arrived in Portugal. Not only will the girl bond with the foreigner, but her family as well.
The book asks what would be the fate of a society that, fascinated by technological advances, abolished books. When the pieces come together the book gets tense so that it won't make you put the book down out of curiosity to know where this story will end up and what will happen to these friendships.
A book that deserves to be read by all those who love to read as it highlights the love for books that we identify with and has some literary references. I recommend it, as much as the ending didn't completely please me, I liked it a lot. I was able to get emotional and make me reflect on various things of our time.
“Words are never just words. There are several levels of reading, and the most important will always be in the deep layers.”
Phrase from one of the most beautiful dialogues I've ever read.
