Santiago Pena arrives in Portugal and meets Alice, a smart and curious girl who still doesn't understand why books, which have always amused her, are abhorred. Having books is a crime and she suffers from it. In the company of Santiago, she will experience good moments of storytelling. Santiago, who will be welcomed by Alice's family, but for different reasons and interests, will be seen by Alice as the one who keeps the magic of the stories alive. Let's meet people who will have their destinies crossed by destiny and realize how much their lives will be modified by the transforming power of books. Even if they are muted.

In a very poetic narrative, Panicacci takes us through a plot in which it is possible to remember at all times how relevant books are for the formation of a society. Whoever thinks that books are outdated and that they can be replaced by technology is wrong. Each one has its importance and one does not cancel the other. With each appearance of Alice, I found myself inside her anxieties, dreams and anguishes. It is a character that conquers with her innocence and also for being a sweet girl even being completely ignored by her parents and older sister.

By the way, we have a totally unstructured family that, living according to appearance, forgets to build more important bonds such as respect, affection and love. Alice was lucky that she was able to live, even for a short time, with her grandmother and uncle who gave her happy moments and showed her the charm of books. Already corrupted by the fascination that stories provide, she sees in Santiago the one who will drive away “the longing for the unknown and filling the hole of absence”.

Full of references, The Silence of the Books comes to show us, to remind us of the importance that books have for all of society and, in the face of the latest censorship events we have experienced, to reinvigorate our willingness to remain firm, resistant.
