Alice Crástino is a little Portuguese girl, who is relegated by her family and is only called “girl”. Faced with his loneliness, he counts on the friendship of the animals that live close to his residence. Until a gentleman arrives in Vila Nova de Gaia, the mysterious Santiago Pena, who will live next to Alice's family. The girl is a dreamer and loves stories, she sees Santiago as a friend and refuge. He becomes her alphabet grandfather and starts to tell her the most diverse stories.

Santiago carries with him a mysterious notebook that contains the memories of Hilário, a young university student who spent many years in prison. And as times have changed and it is now possible to identify a criminal gene in people, Hilário is one of the first to pass the test.

Thus, we follow part of Hilário's life, his years in prison until reaching the present day with Santiago and in a frightening time, where having books is a crime. Due to technological advances and the so-called unrestricted interaction, books became anti-democratic, as it would freeze the author's opinion.

The work is narrated in a masterful and poetic way, with several excellent literary references. In addition to mentioning the use of random applications that indicate decisions to be made for those who use them. Which brings many reflections on the present day and what will become of the future. Certainly a highly recommended reading for the theme it addresses and the importance of books in our lives. Of information and knowledge.

“Words are not just words. There are several levels of reading, and what is most important will always be in the deepest layers”.
